2D Animation - Lil Guy & The Puddle

A tiny character, a tiny problem and a simple story about finding your own solution.

This animation tells a small story about Lil Guy, a round and slightly clueless bean who encounters a puddle that feels way too big for him. I wanted to make something simple and warm, where the emotion and humour come from the movement. Lil Guy tries a few things, gets a little confused and eventually finds a solution that was right in front of him. It is a tiny moment, but it shows how much personality a character can have with only a few shapes and clear animation choices.

What I Did

I began by researching cute and rounded character designs and created moodboards, sketches and a storyboard to shape Lil Guy’s look and personality. After that I animated everything frame by frame in Adobe Animate, keeping the design simple so I could focus on timing, clear poses and small expressive details. I wrapped up by coloring the scenes and adding light sound effects and music to match the playful tone.

A bean shape with three leaves that work like eyebrows and help show emotion.

Only two main colors, inspired by cute rounded characters from my references.
Friendly forest look
Soft shapes, warm colors and clear silhouettes that keep the focus on the animation.
Classic animation principles
Squash and stretch, anticipation, secondary motion and slow in and out.
Frame by frame movement
Everything is drawn by hand, including a smooth three quarter turn.

What I Loved About This Project

I loved creating a character who could feel expressive with such a minimal design. Working frame by frame was time consuming but satisfying, and the small touches like the leaves bobbing when he walks added so much charm. Learning to use animation principles more intentionally really paid off and made the whole scene feel more alive.
